# Light and airy

> Bright, soft, romantic pictures of couples, families and babies, exposed one or more stops over so skin glows and skies and highlights melt into cream, with low contrast, lifted shadows and pale pastel colour: peach skin, minty greens, blush and ivory. The sun sits behind or beside the people, or they stand in open shade, and the lens is used wide open so backgrounds dissolve. It began with fine-art wedding photographers on medium-format colour negative film such as Fuji Pro 400H and spread to digital through presets that copy that film.

- Period: 2010–present
- Kind: Vernacular & studio
- Also called: Bright and airy, Light & airy, Fine art film wedding photography, Film wedding look

## How the look is made

- Put the sun behind or beside your subjects, late in the day or in open shade, and expose for the faces so the background glows.
- Overexpose on purpose: rate colour negative film a stop or more slower (Fuji Pro 400H at 200) and meter in the shadows, or expose digital files to the right without clipping skin.
- Keep contrast low and shadows open: lift the blacks, soften the highlights and keep colours pale and pastel.
- Choose bright, open places (beaches, fields, white rooms with big windows) and dress people in whites, neutrals, peaches and pastels.
- Shoot wide open on a medium-format or fast normal lens so the background melts into soft shapes.
- Guide people into gentle, affectionate moments rather than stiff poses, and grade a whole gallery the same way.

## How it is lit

- The sun low behind or beside the people, metered for the shadow side of the faces so the background glows and the lens flares.
- Open shade or overcast daylight, with a white reflector or bright sand and walls bouncing light back.
- Large windows in white, neutral rooms for getting-ready, family and newborn pictures.

### The rendered set-up

The sun low behind and beside the sitter, a white reflector in front, metered for the face so the background glows. Rendered in Blender Cycles on a synthetic clay figure or still life, with the lights exactly where the plan on the page puts them.

### A light plan from its choices (schematic)

- Key: the sun, from behind, to the camera’s left, low, hard.
- Reflector: a white card or reflector, about 55° to the camera’s right, soft.

## Camera settings

35–85 mm · f/1.4–f/2.8 · 1/2000–1/250 s · ISO 100–400 (on 645), documented. Digital: fast primes wide open. Shutter speeds are inferred.

## Directing people

Couples are prompted into gentle, unforced moments rather than lined up facing the lens: walking hand in hand, standing close with foreheads touching or heads bowed together, turned in towards each other or away into the sun, eyes down or on each other, with soft smiles and easy laughter and only now and then a look to the camera.

## Styling

Outfits in whites, ivory, blush, peach and soft neutrals (lace, linen, flowing skirts), groomed but natural-looking hair and make-up, few props beyond loose flowers, and bright places chosen for their light: beaches, meadows, wheat fields, palms or white rooms with big windows.

## Before you shoot it

Weddings, families and newborns are real people's private moments, and the look is practised by many named living photographers: describe its choices, never prompt with a photographer's name or copy a portfolio, generate adults only (no babies or children), and never present a generated picture as a real couple's wedding or a real family's session.
