# Y2K digicam and flash revival

> Nights out with friends shot on a cheap early-2000s compact digital camera: the built-in flash blasts faces and shiny surfaces while the room drops to black, the low-resolution sensor gives soft detail, noise and blown highlights, colours come out vivid or oddly tinted, and an orange date stamp often sits in a corner. Without flash the same cameras smear motion into blur. The point is to look unpolished and of the moment, unlike a smartphone, and the pictures are posted as photo dumps.

- Period: 2021–present
- Where it began: A Gen Z trend spread on TikTok and Instagram in the early 2020s
- Kind: Digital & social
- Also called: Digicam aesthetic, Digicam revival, Y2K camera look, CCD camera trend
- Page: https://lumogeny.com/styles/y2k-digicam-flash/

## How the look is made

- Use an old compact digital camera, or something that behaves like one, not a phone or a modern camera.
- Keep the built-in flash on at night and shoot close, so faces glare and the background goes dark.
- Shoot many quick frames of friends and keep the blurred, overexposed and crooked ones.
- Leave the date stamp on and the file as it came out of the camera; do not clean, sharpen or retouch it.
- Post them together as a dump or carousel the next day, as a record of the night.

## How it is lit

- The camera's built-in flash at close range in a dark room, club or street, the background falling to black.
- No flash in dim stage or street light, with a slow handheld exposure that smears movement.

### The rendered set-up

The camera's own flash at close range in a dark room, the background falling to black. Rendered in Blender Cycles on a synthetic clay figure or still life, with the lights exactly where the plan on the page puts them.

### A light plan from its choices (schematic)

- Key: a flash on the camera, from the camera, hard.

## Camera settings

28–85 mm · f/2.8–f/5.9 · 1/60–1 s · ISO 80–400 (on compact), documented. Small-CCD compacts of 2000–2010 with 3–4× zooms, e.g. Canon SD960 IS (28–112 mm eq., f/2.8–5.8) or Olympus FE-230 (38–114 mm, f/3.1–5.9); flash frames near 1/30–1/60 s, unflashed frames at 1/4–1 s smear (specimens, ISO 80).

## Directing people

Friends squeeze together facing the flash, cheek to cheek or arms round each other, eyes to the lens, grinning, laughing or pulling faces; others are caught mid-dance with arms waving, mid-blink or turning away, and those frames are kept. Mirror and arm's-length shots too; performers on stage are caught singing or playing, faces raised or bowed.

## Styling

Nothing is set up: friends in their own going-out clothes and make-up, often Y2K-inspired (small tops, slip dresses, baggy jeans, glitter), in real bedrooms, kitchens, clubs, cars and gig crowds, with drinks and clutter left in shot.

## Before you shoot it

The subjects are real friends at parties, proms and concerts, many of them teenagers: post only with their consent, never sexualise minors, and keep generated images to adults. Do not generate digicam pictures of real or famous people, and never present a generated image as a real snapshot of an actual event or as a photograph from the 2000s; label it as AI-generated.
